Subject Overview

Years 12 & 13

At Space Studio we value the Level 3 BTEC Applied Science course as an alternative route to a career in science for our Y12 and Y13 students. The wide variety of units on the BTEC specification allows us to tailor the topics we teach to the needs of our students, and it offers them the chance to be assessed through a mixture of both examinations and coursework. Students can choose from a variety of course sizes ranging from the Extended Certificate (equivalent in size to 1 A Level) up to the Extended Diploma (equivalent in size to 3 A Levels) depending on their desired career path and the number of other subjects they wish to study.

Grades on BTEC Courses range from Distinction* to Pass, with a Distinction being equivalent to a grade A in an A Level course, a Merit being equivalent to a grade C and a Pass being equivalent to a grade E. Students are assessed through mixture of internally marked coursework units assessments and externally marked exam-style assessments, allowing for a wider range of teaching and learning styles than on the traditional A Level course. The BTEC courses are very practical-led with students completing a range of investigations across Chemistry, Physics and Biology and then using their results as the basis for learning and understanding the theory.

Students can choose to follow either:

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Applied Science (equivalent to 1 A Levels)
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Applied Science (equivalent to 2 A Levels)
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Applied Science (equivalent to 3 A Levels)

All students studying BTEC Science will have 10 hours of lessons per week with additional independent study periods for those studying the larger qualifications.
